Coastguards have issued a warning about today's heavy rain and strong winds.

They're urging people to take extra care and avoid exposed areas of the coastline  - and stay out of the water.

Forecasters say wind gusts today could reach around 40 miles an hour.

Across the region, a number of events have been cancelled because of the weather - including the Boardmasters music event in Cornwall.

Both of today's mass ascents at the Bristol Balloon Fiesta have been cancelled - but events are taking place on the ground.

Organisers of the inflatable 5k event at the Bath & West Showground tomorrow have called it off.

The Environment Agency is warning people to be careful around the River Chew Catchment.

Also in parts of the East and West Somerset  - and West Dorset  - streams network.

A spokesperson for Torbay RNLI said: "Conditions around the coastline will be challenging with associated tidal surges and large surf so please take extra care and keep a safe distance from the water. As always, if you see someone in difficulty, please call 999 and ask for the Coastguard."

The junior raft race, which was part of Teignmouth Regatta, has been called off.

In Brixham the Pilgrim trawler open day has also been cancelled.

This weekend's Race Across Torbay has been postponed until September 7.

A spokesperson said: "The decision to postpone the race was based on worrying weather alerts, meaning there would have been a significant safety risk to our racers."
