£200k to 'mitigate' potential Brexit impacts

Councillors in the Mendips could tonight vote to set aside £200,000 because of Brexit.

The money would be used to 'mitigate any potential short-term adverse impacts' locally from leaving the EU.

District councils had already been given £35,000 over two years to support Brexit contingency planning.

A report reads: "Despite the fact that Government remains focused on securing a deal with the EU allowing both national and local government to manage a successful transition through to December 2020 it is only responsible and prudent to prepare for a Brexit scenario that has adverse impacts."

It adds that: "This is a request in principle only, and would only be utilised to mitigate against specific events arising in the event of a Brexit scenario leading to adverse impacts."
