Scrabble championships return to Torbay

Yesterday there was an international schools event ahead of the start of today's world championships

The Scrabble World Championships get underway at Torquay's Riviera Centre today - following the success of last year's event.

Reigning champion Nigel Richards is returning to defend his title.

There's entries from 15 countries and a $20,000 prize pool.

The competition is being broadcast live on the internet and there's even live commentary.

After the round robin stages the final two players will be decided on Saturday.

They will then go head to head on Sunday - competing in five rounds before the ultimate champion will be crowned.

Yesterday a school's event took place at the venue to promote the sport and encourage younger players.
