Helicopter used in overnight search for missing driver

Police have confirmed a a missing driver from near Newton Abbot has now been found.

Overnight a vehicle was reported as being heavily damaged on St Marychurch Road at the junction with Twickenham Road.

Officers were concerned for the welfare of the driver, who was not with the vehicle, and started a search for them.

A force spokesman said: "Police were called at 3.30am today following reports of a van having been in collision with a tree on St Marychurch Road.

"There was no-one with the vehicle which had suffered substantial damage and was blocking the road.

"Local units, plus the police helicopter, conducted an area search following concerns for the welfare of any occupants.

"Police were notified at 4.50am that the suspected driver had been taken to Torbay Hospital by family members. The man is being treated for serious chest injuries.

"St Marychurch Road remains closed at the junction with Twickenham Road while further enquiries are carried out.

"Anyone who witnessed the collision or saw anyone in the vicinity of the vehicle at the time of the incident is asked to contact police via 101@dc.police.uk or by phone on 101, quoting log number 66 of 11/01/19."
