Man charged after white powder was sent to MPs and councillors

A man, arrested in Devon, has been charged with 16 counts of making a noxious substance hoax.

It's after a white powder substance was sent by post to Members of Parliament and councillors.

The Eastern Region Special Operations Unit said in a statement: "Richard Hayes, 40, of no fixed abode, was arrested in Barnstaple, Devon, on Thursday (18 July) by officers from ERSOU’s counter terrorism policing unit.

"The charges relate to a number of incidents between 2011 and 2014 in which a white powder substance was sent by post to Members of Parliament and councillors.

"Hayes was remanded in custody ahead of a court appearance at Exeter Crown Court on 22 August."
