Controversial changes to Teignmouth hospital could move forward today.

NHS bosses are meeting to vote on whether to start a new public consultation.

It would see day procedures and outpatient clinics moved to Dawlish instead.

Plans to establish 12 rehabilitation beds in Teignmouth could also be scrapped.

Campaigners from the Save Teignmouth Hospital group say they'll be attending the meeting.

A spokesperson said: "In 2017 the Community Hospitals in Ashburton and Bovey Tracey were closed, along with 32 beds in Torbay hospital. Brixham and Paignton minor injury units were closed, and Paignton also lost its in-patient ward.

"The closure of Dartmouth Hospital followed, along with the Minor Injuries department at Teignmouth.

"The down grading of Teignmouth Hospital continued with the hospital ward closed and 12 rehabilitation beds mothballed and then removed.

"In 2018, the authorities suggested closing the hospital itself, and now in 2020 they are putting forward formal plans that could lead to the closure of Teignmouth hospital.

"Health service cuts and the decimation of local hospital services has been throughout met with outrage from residents’ groups, local councillors and healthcare unions, and from local health campaigners, supporters of Save Our Hospital Services - South Devon and Torbay, Save Teignmouth Hospital, Keep Our NHS Public and HealthCampaignsTogether."

The agenda for today's meeting says the Governing Body is asked to approve commencing public consultation on the proposal to:

  • Move high-use community clinics from Teignmouth Community Hospital into a Health and Wellbeing Centre in Teignmouth.
  • Move specialist outpatient clinics from Teignmouth Community Hospital into Dawlish Community Hospital.
  • Move day case procedures from Teignmouth Community Hospital into Dawlish Community Hospital.
  • Continue with a model of community-based intermediate care, reversing the decision to establish 12 rehabilitation beds in Teignmouth Community Hospital.
