Work is due to begin on improving cycle and pedestrian links between Southampton and Chandler's Ford.

Hampshire County Council has identified the route as a major cycling hot-spot, with more than 230 journeys made there everyday.

The work, costing just over £1.1 million, will see an off-road shared use cycleway and footpath installed along Hut Hill - joining Chandler's Ford and Chilworth.

It is set to get underway on Monday 18th November.

Councillor Rob Humby, Deputy Leader of Hampshire County Council and Executive Member for Economy, Transport and Environment, said:

“This route has been identified as a major cycle route and one of three north-south connections between Eastleigh district and Southampton for cyclists.

"It is an important link between large residential and employment areas, and provides access to schools, local amenities, and leisure facilities."

Councillor Jacqui Rayment, Southampton City Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Place and Transport, added:

"The network has a fundamental role to play in encouraging more people to travel sustainably, providing purpose-built routes that enable people to cycle safely and confidently in and around our city.”

The scheme is being jointly delivered by Hampshire County Council and Southampton City Council - funded in part by the Government’s Transforming Cities Fund, awarded to the area.

The project is expected to be completed by Spring 2020 and will be carried out during off-peak hours between 9:30am and 4pm.

Councillor Humby apologised for the anticipated disturbance, saying: “We will try to keep any inconvenience to a minimum.

"However, I would advise that people plan their journeys in advance if using this route."
