Cheltenham has been chosen as one of 10 places in the UK where meetings will be held about the future of the underground burying of radioactive nuclear waste
After more than 60 years of waste being produced by nuclear power stations in the UK, The Government have now said that they need to start safely managing it.
They're now trying to work out where's best to build a geological disposal facility (GDF), which will allow them to safely dispose of the waste hundreds of metres underground.
On their website, they've said that a GDF is internationally recognised as the safest long-term solution; and that having one in the UK will create jobs and guaranteed investment for the host community.
As a result of this, Radioactive Waste Management (RWM) have organised a series of events to help people understand the proposed idea, and to answer any questions that people or organisations might have on the issue.
One of the events is being held in Cheltenham on Tuesday 26 February, although the location has not been revealed yet - this is where the other ones are being held:
- Cambridge – Thursday 7 February
- London – Wednesday 13 February
- Birmingham – Thursday 14 February
- Manchester – Tuesday 19 February
- Penrith – Wednesday 20 February
- Cheltenham – Tuesday 26 February
- Exeter – Thursday 28 February
- Darlington – Thursday 7 March
- Swansea - Tuesday 12 March
- Llandudno - Thursday 14 March
With the exception of London and Manchester, each of the venues will host two events, one in the early afternoon (12.00-3.00pm) and the other in the evening (6.00-9.00pm).
They will include refreshments and will last three hours in total. The content of both is the same, so participants can choose the one that suits them best.
If you wish to attend the event, you need to email email@example.com and include your name, organisation, email and contact number. You'll also need to tell them which event you wish to attend and at what time, as well as any special requirements in terms of access and diet.
Full details of the event - including the venue - will be sent out once you've registered your interest via email.
