We Are All Made of Stars – Rowan Coleman
I began it one night for a patient who could no longer hold a pen, and who wanted to make sure her husband would know how to work the washing machine after she’d gone. That’s when the letter writing started.
If you only had enough time left to leave one letter, who would it be for, and what on Earth would you write….?
Title: We Are All Made of Stars

Genre: Contemporary Fiction

Publisher: Ebury Press
Laura's Rating: 3/5
‘We Are All Made of Stars’ focuses on a group of characters, all different people leading their own separate lives, but all linked in one way or another to the Marie Francis Hospice and Rehabilitation Centre. Stella is the nurse, working the nightshift, who helps patients in their final days, to write letters to their loved ones. Some are simple messages of thanks, some regret, and some revealing life changing secrets. Stella helps as much as she can, but is privately dealing with a massive heartache of her own.
A story drawing attention to debilitating illness and end of life care, but by no means sombre or depressing. Yes, there are sad moments, uncomfortable scenes, but Coleman does well to not let that take over, and deals with the characters in a way that shows life really does go on. While someone is nearing the end of their life, another character is finding love, another is trying to mend their cracked marriage before it breaks beyond repair, and another discovers huge family secrets.
Enjoyable isn’t a word I’d use to describe this tale, but it does promise to be heartwarming, moving, and even hopeful. Don’t be put off by the subject matter, it’s a beautiful insight into a sometimes awkward and uncomfortable situation.
Other books by Rowan Coleman include ‘The Memory Book’, ‘Runaway Wife’ and ‘Lessons In Laughing Out Loud’.
