Royal Ascot preparations continue with a week to go

There's just a week to go until Royal Ascot gets underway - and the organisers have told The Breeze they're ready for many visitors to arrive.

Tens of thousands of people are expected to attend each day's racing action, in what is known as a pivotal moment of the horse racing calendar.

Nick Smith is the event's Director of Racing and Communications.

He's told us preparations start many months before the famous sporting event begins:

"We began preparations on the track in reality in October.

"We've done a huge amount of work removing the old thatch and re-seeding the straight track, to create a better surface and add stronger roots to the area than we've had before."

Nick has told us he's confident race-goers will appreciate what's on offer when they arrive:

"The whole brand changes, so the Ascot brand comes down and the Royal Ascot brand goes up.

"We're a 30,000 seater venue outside of Royal Ascot, but that goes up to 80,000 when the event takes place.

"As you can imagine there's a lot of temporary seating and other infrastructure which needs installing, which takes a lot of time."

Those attending the racing next week are being urged to check before they travel to Ascot, as strike action on South Western Railway begins on the event's opening day.

RMT members are due to walk out between Tuesday 18th June and Saturday 22nd June, as part of an ongoing row surrounding the role of guards on trains.
