The Frome Medical Practice say they're doing their bit to help reduce CO2 emissions and improve sustainability.
They're making a number of changes to the way they work, including switching to prescribing environmentally friendly dry powder inhalers.
Shaun Green, Deputy Director of Clinical Effectiveness and Medicines Management at Somerset CCG said: “Switching to lower carbon dry powder inhalers can save 180 miles’ worth of CO2, and completely eradicate the use of HFC propellants contained in aerosol inhalers (which are bad for the environment). This switch is a real win-win, as not only are these inhalers greener they are also easier for most people to use and get the right dosage. However some patients may have better inhaler technique with aerosol inhalers so dry powders aren’t suitable for everyone”
Practice Manager Karen Creffield said: “Switching to dry powder inhalers is just one of a whole host of green initiatives we are making here at the practice; we are a member of the Refill Frome scheme, have a very efficient recycling scheme, have reduced £8.5k paper costs by switching to a text messaging service and already have solar panels installed on our building. We are also very proud to be taking part in the Royal College of General Practitioner’s (RCGP) Green Impact Award, where we are focused on making as many sustainable choices as possible and helping to encourage and support other practices across Somerset and nationally to do the same.”
Senior GP Partner, Dr Helen Kingston said: “We are very pleased with the results we have seen so far from our work on the Green Impact Award, but we aren’t finished! We are looking to further reduce our impact on the environment in the future, reducing our reliance on fossil fuels by looking at further implementation of renewable energy. We are also working with the local community to promote sustainable products such as reusable (washable) sanitary towels and ‘mooncups’ whilst also supporting those who struggle with the cost of these, in order to help tackle period poverty for women in our area.”
Terry Kemple, RCGP Representative for Sustainability, Climate Change and Green Issues said: “Frome Medical Practice continues to lead the way to improving their sustainability. This year they are the first UK practice to achieve our Gold plus award, and they are the Overall winner in our RCGP/NUS Green Impact for Health Award scheme for 2018/19. Congratulations to all the team at Frome.”
