'Stop blocking roads with long queues for fast food'

Ambulance crews say they've been delayed by long queues for takeaways and drive throughs.

Bosses at the south western service say there's been incidents where they haven't been able to get through.

It's because roads have become blocked, as cars queue, and traffic has built up.

A spokesperson said: "With some drive throughs and takeaways opening throughout the country it’s important that everyone remembers a few things.

"If it’s too busy and it’s unsafe to queue because of traffic, please go back later. It could be your family we are trying to get to or are critically ill in the back of an ambulance.

"At the end of the day please remember. Your takeaway can wait. Our patients cannot. What could cost you a fiver may cost someone their life.

"We’ve already seen a few incidents of crews struggling to get past traffic on emergencies due to roads being blocked and traffic being built up so please consider a few things:

  • Junctions - is there clear access so an emergency vehicle can cross unobstructed or pull in/out?
  • Traffic lights - leave enough space behind the stop line so we can get through if needed, but never go through a red light for an emergency vehicle
  • Leave enough space in front of you for an emergency vehicle to pull in when overtaking if traffic the opposite side of the way doesn’t stop
  • In two lanes of the same flow, stay alert in case we are trying to get through. Keep music down and have the window open a bit if practicable
