East Hampshire's MP has welcomed the launch of the new Tourism Sector Deal, which will benefit hundreds of local tourism related businesses.

Damian Hinds says the announcement will help further develop the industry within the UK.

The deal commits to building an extra 130,000 hotel rooms nationwide and plans to make the UK the most accessible destination for visitors with disabilities.

Damian Hinds MP said:

As someone who used to work in Travel & Tourism I have always believed that there is scope for much more development of tourism in and to the UK. We have unique advantages and pulling power. But we need to persuade more tourists to venture beyond London - so I am very pleased that this plan prioritises that.

"Tourism, both domestic and inbound international is already very important to our local economy here in East Hampshire, not only for our attractions and hoteliers, but for pubs and shops as well. From the stunning South Downs National Park to the world-renowned Jane Austen’s House Museum and brilliant Gilbert White’s House, East Hampshire offers visitors a wide range of cultural experiences within one of the most beautiful landscapes in Britain. We have a particularly vibrant calendar of events such as such as the Alton Regency Week and Petersfield Music Festival. And it has been good to see exciting additions to our cultural and recreational asset base, including the Petersfield Museum, Writer’s Way and Shipwright’s Way.

“East Hants is home to some great hotels, B&Bs, camping and glamping. But we don’t yet have an abundance of accommodation and could do with more.

“In my role as Education Secretary, I am also focused on the need to develop skills across a wide range of sectors, to help grow businesses, export earnings and productivity. Travel & tourism has a wide variety of career opportunities in and around East Hampshire and I'm pleased the Sector Deal has skills at its heart.”
