Community Group of the Year
Community Group Award sponsored by South Devon UTC
Awarded to a group that has made a difference in a local area of South Devon.
Fishstock Brixham - “The Fishstock Brixham Committee work throughout the year to help raise money for the Fishermens Mission; the main fundraising event of the year is the Fishstock Brixham Seafood & Music Festival. The committee are all volunteers, many of whom also serve on the Local Advisory Committee (LAC) of the Fishermens Mission (the LAC being the 'eyes and ears' for the Area Superintendent, helping to identify those in need of welfare or counselling and providing vital care for distressed fishermen, widows and orphans). The Fishstock team and Mission Area Superintendent meet every month throughout the year, giving their time and expertise to ensure that the unique one-day Fishstock Brixham Festival - held in the transformed Brixham Fish Quay - is a fabulous day out for all the family. Since the first Festival over 9 years ago, a whopping £75,000 has been raised for the Mission, and the Fishstock Team aim to add a substantial amount to that after this year's Festival on Saturday 9 September.”
Home Instead - “This company is working tirelessly to improve the lives of the elderly in South Devon. They support families of those they work with in so many ways: information, workshops, a listening ear! They also have tremendous support for their staff who all work above and beyond. The work they do for those with dementia is truly fantastic especially as this is such a growing problem. The franchise is only 2 years old but already they have made such a difference to so many people!”
Chelston Action Group - “A local community group in Chelston who have put so many activities into a community that had nothing. This group was set up only 3 years ago however has gone from strength to strength with a very limited committee and limited resources to support a very deprived and under resourced area. It deserves to be recognised for the good work it does within the community and the way it has tirelessly worked to bring the community together, both young and old. It thrives on the people who use its facilities and from the goodwill and endeavours of those who run its committee. Chelston Action Group also won The 2016 Sanctuary Community Star Award for working in partnership other groups and communities, something they are very proud of. with From small acorns mighty oaks do grow.”
Humanity Torbay - “Humanity Torbay is a charity that helps the homeless, vulnerable and those struggling in life. Along with helping to find food, clothing and a place to live Humanity Torbay goes beyond to help with finding work, training, work experience etc, they aid in addiction and help arrange medical visits be it doctor, dentist or hospital. The group is run solely by volunteers and funds are raised by donations and various car boot sales. They have only been running for a couple of months however have come a long way and hope to replicate their success across the Bay.”
