The winner of the Contribution to the Community Award is Ron Etheridge

Ron EtheridgeRon Etheridge was a player with pace and counter-attacking flair who played 187 games for Gloucester both at fullback and later in his career on the wing, scoring 40 tries. He played 9 times for Gloucestershire and was a Scottish trialist.

He joined the Gloucester club in 1969, Ron made his final appearance for Gloucester against Exeter in the last game of the 1979-80 season. In a career that went from teenage prodigy to unsung hero, he always gave a 100% performance.

Off the pitch, Ron had a long career with the police force, and then later working in a school with children with challenging behaviour.  Since retiring, Ron has worked with the Gloucester Rugby Community Charity and for the last 5 years supported our education department, and often volunteering his time on match days.

Ron drives the bus to pick the children up from school and bring them to Kingsholm as well as supporting them during their time with us.  A large proportion of the children we work with are from disadvantaged backgrounds and are at risk of disengaging from school.  Ron plays a vital role in ensuring that the children have a positive experience learning.  Ron's enthusiasm for helping and supporting his local community shines through and we could not do it without him.
