Charity Champion Winner
Charity Champion Award sponsored by Volunteer Gloucester
Bringing Volunteers and Charities Together in Gloucestershire. We work with charities and other non-profits to help them recruit the wonderful people who come to us looking for volunteer roles. It's not just charity shops and gardening - we've loads of "people helping people" roles too!
Awarded for a consistent contribution to the Charity sector.
The winner of the Chairty Champion Award is Terry Howard
I am a volunteer for Cheltenham Guardians and I would like to nominate Terry Howard, the founder of the Cheltenham Guardians. It is an organisation unlike any other I have ever known and I am so privileged to be a part of it. Not only is the Guardians incredible at the safeguarding young people out in the Night-time economy but as a group of volunteers we are like a family. Guardians have become a huge support network and it's easily the best thing I have gotten involved with in many years.
Without Terry, there would be no organisation at all. He set it up himself and the majority of the funding comes out of his own pocket. He is out every single Saturday night protecting the people of Cheltenham. In fact, he has never missed a Saturday night since he set up the organisation. I really could go on for hours about how wonderful this man is. I have never met someone who cares more about the welfare of young people. His heart is one of the biggest I've ever known. I would nominate him a million times over if I could.
Nominator: Tara Rowe
Our runner-up is Sally Hayes
Shortly after being diagnosed with breast cancer aged 37, Maggie’s in Cheltenham very quickly became our favourite place – like a second home to our family over the next few months. Peaceful, homely, welcoming, coffee, cake, the very worst news was easier to process.
Sally Hayes and all of the staff and volunteers at Maggie's have been so wonderful at supporting my family and I.
Sally manages the Centre, staff, volunteers and the evidenced-based support programme. She is also a cancer support specialist and offers emotional and psychological support to any visitors entering the centre or via telephone.
Sally has arranged lots of family events to help children who have family members going through a cancer diagnosis.
The activities they provide have really assisted me in my recovery.
I would like to nominate Sally for the wonderful work that she does. I feel so grateful to be able to use the centre and have access to support there.
Nomination from Carly Appleby
