Major fire breaks out in roof of building in Southampton

A number of people have had to be evacuated overnight after a fire broke out in the roof of a building in Southampton.

Firefighters from across Hampshire have spent hours bringing the incident on the corner of Oxford Street and John Street under control.

Teams were called to the incident in the early hours of this morning.

Crews from Basingstoke, Alton, Portchester, Cosham, St Mary's, Hightown, Redbridge, Eastleigh, Portchester, Cosham, Botley, Lyndhurst, Beaulieu and Hampshire Fire and Rescue's Command Unit have all been working at the scene.

An investigation is now underway - and crews are due to carry out enquiries at the scene throughout the day.

These updates were posted on social media.

News of the major fire comes after crews also had to deal with a separate fire elsewhere in the city, which started in the basement of a property.

It's believed an electrical explosion was to blame for that incident.
