The Alton Sports Centre has opened in the town today (January 11, 2020).

The facility is managed by Everyone Active in partnership with East Hampshire District Council and a celebratory event has been held from 10am until 4pm.

Former Olympic athlete Colin Jackson and former Olympic swimmer Mark Foster officially opened the complex with the official ribbon cutting at 10am.

The new centre will offer a diverse range of facilities including:

  • Six-lane main pool that seats up to 150 spectators
  • A learner pool with adjustable floor
  • A 130-station fitness suite
  • Group cycling studio
  • A six-court sports hall
  • Two multi-use studios
  • Chip 'n' Climb wall
  • Two glass-backed squash sourts
  • Two five-a-side outdoor 3G football pitches
  • Large cafe that seats up to 100 visitors
  • Destination spa

The open day saw visitors get a 'first look' at the complex and try out a variety of activities including gym challenges and exercise classes.

Lydia Morrison, Director of Corporate Services, said:

"This fantastic new sports centre is the perfect modern facility for Alton’s families and is a huge improvement on the current facility.

“Delivering a project of this scale is no easy task for any council, especially in these financially difficult times and we are incredibly proud of what has been achieved here.

“It will be a wonderful facility, the biggest in East Hampshire, and a real benefit for Alton and the surrounding area.
