Alton Walking Festival gets underway

A month long event in East Hampshire is hoping to encourage people to be confident in walking around their local area and nearby countryside.

A number of organisations are involved in running the Alton Walking Festival, which is taking place throughout May.

Ian Fleming is one of the Walk Leaders - he's told us walking is good for your health and wellbeing:

"Some people haven't got the confidence to go out on their own.

"They can't read maps or they're not very confident in reading maps, so these events can equip them with the skills they need.

"They can also give them a glimpse of parts of the countryside they haven't seen."

Natalie Beckell from Alton Town Council is helping organise the event - she says it's a great way of getting to know people and getting some exercise:

"It's about getting out walking and getting people out into the countryside.

"But it's also about getting people to explore Alton and the surrounding areas."
