70% of drivers want to stop smart motorways

The Basingstoke based AA has found more than half of drivers apparently want the introduction of smart motorways in England to be halted.

The motoring organisation's latest survey suggests seven in ten think it's more dangerous when cars use all the lanes, compared with a traditional hard shoulder.

The feedback also revealed that only one in 10 people feel the new developments are safer than a conventional highway.

Smart Motorways have faced mixed reaction since being introduced over 10 years ago

Highways England has responded to the findings, saying it will keep monitoring the safety of smart motorways.
