Carer of the Year

Some people may find the below content distressing.

The Carer of the Year award sponsored by Malvern View Care Home recognises an exceptional professional or voluntary carer.

Malvern View Care HomeWinner: Eileen Jones

I work alongside Eileen Jones at Leckhampton Court Hospice, Sue Ryder.  One of the hardest working health care assistants I have ever worked with and still manages to have a smiling glow about her. Eileen's been working at the hospice for 6 and a half years and she still seems to have the energy and passion to give personalised individual care.

When family and friends aren't able to be with patients in there final moments it really shows why Eileen stands out from the rest. Her patience and good morals shine through and will do whatever she can for the patient in their final moments.

Eileen's very humble and would never think that she has such a big impact on the patients and the other members of staff as she does. Just gets on with her job with a genuine passion for caring.

Finalist: Zena Makey

Zena used to run a care agency. She took me on as a client in September 2003 and very soon she became my main carer as my needs were so complex - not just my physical disabilities and medical diagnosis; my mental health was also very fragile.

The first 5 years she cared for me must have been very hard for Zena but she showed incredible patience and consistency. At a very dark time, she saved my life - by showing me, for the first time ever that someone cared for me. From then on, I became part of her family and she took me on holiday and on day trips. I felt loved for the first time and I finally had someone in my life I could trust. I feel like my life started all over 15 years ago when I met her; she has given me the best 15 years of my life. Despite my physical pain, I have learnt to enjoy life and have real connections with people. Zena is one in a million!
