Your Nominees:

Nick and We Love Melville Hill – "Nick started ‘We Love Melville Hill’ 10 years ago to challenge the social deprivation and inequalities those living in Torquay’s Melville Hill area face. Nick was behind the Torshame campaign in 2012 that used photos on social media to expose some of the terrible housing conditions Torbay residents were living in. This led to Torbay's Mayor, Gordon Oliver, releasing £100,000 for enforcement action to be taken against rogue landlords in charge of some of the worst properties across Torbay. Nick also helped the Melville community to be the first in Torbay to benefit from a community-based CCTV system used by the police to gather intelligence and catch criminals. This has become such a huge deterrent and now helps locals feel safe within their community. Nick is an avid campaigner for social justice and believes everyone matters and should be valued as a human being. He really has helped to make this community a truly better, safer place and will always put himself out there to protect the community he loves."

Pete  –  "Pete was out kayaking one day off Goodrington Beach when he noticed a kayak floating adrift. He paddled out to investigate and found a man in the water struggling without a life jacket. He immediately took off his own jacket to give to the man after noticing he was finding it hard to stay afloat. He then phoned the coast guard, attached a tow line and proceeded to head for the coast towing both items along. Shortly after the coast guard arrived, took the injured man to hospital and Pete paddled back out to carry on fishing!”

Scott Walker – “Scott is an absolute inspiration to everyone he comes across. In 2012 Scott was cycling from one care job to another when he got knocked off his bike, leaving him with life threatening injuries. After fully recovering, much to his doctor's disbelief he decided to rebuild his life rather than give up on it. Today Scott works as a Health Care Assistant/Support Worker helping others as much as possible. He regularly attends the gym and manages to squeeze in running, obstacle course races,  climbing and cross fit. His motto is: ‘life is about making memories and being a better version of myself’ and lives by that on a daily basis. Scott is currently enrolling at South Devon College to study and train as a personal trainer to further motivate and inspire others."

PATH – “Path was founded 19 months ago and ran for the first 5 months without a name, with just Kath and her daughter Zoe, a couple of flasks and a car boot full of hope. A huge amount of passion, determination and local support later and they are now part of a large group of 5,000 dedicated supporters, local businesses, schools and organisations. More recently, Path has achieved charitable status, fundraiser for their own mini bus, run a weekly homeless event and meet regularly alongside other service providers and organisations to help end street homelessness. Every single night of the week, 365 days a year, whatever the weather, a team of dedicated volunteers visit Torbay's homeless and vulnerable. They have a team of over 45 sandwich makers each fortnight, recycle end of day food from local supermarkets, factories and bakeries to convert into delicious food for Torbay's homeless. But it's not just about the food. Being starved of love and compassion is far worse. Path are always there to be a shoulder to cry on and to listen unconditionally without judgement. They have saved tears and undoubtedly lives. The network of help and support that path provides in the face of adversity is far reaching, working tirelessly to dispel the myths and legends surrounding homelessness. Path run workshops and talks with local schools and youth groups to inspire the next generation of decision makers to be more aware of those in need. It's incredible how one small act of kindness has grown and pulled together the local community to look after the homeless neighbours in our bay.”
